It is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy.” I finally found the source for a very interesting statistic that I’d heard about. The statistic, colloquially put: Travelling in an automobile is twice as dangerous as travelling by bicycle. The long version, which I found on Aaron Tarfman’s excellent web site: Per 1,000,000 exposure hours, the fatalities are “The most efficient kind of transportation is already being where you want to go.” This photo has been making the rounds of the Portland bike blogs, but if you haven’t seen it, here it is. This bicycle is called a moederfiets (“mother’s-bike”) and is, of course, Dutch. I’ve been dreaming about having a custom bicycle built someday. Last night we had supper at Open Kitchen, a temporary community restaurant that is part of the monthlong Ghosttown project. Unfortunately, the month is almost over, and we just found out about it. We brought some soup and shared it with a bunch of folks, and enjoyed some [...] There have been a lot of headlines in the news recently about the indictment of a crew of alleged “eco-terrorists.” These people destroyed property as a form of protest against the damage that they believed various organizations were doing to our environment. I’m not going to pledge my allegiance to either side of this; I [...] . . . we cannot stop what has begun.
